DIY Hot Oil Treatment

It's getting hotter, the sun is out, and so am I. Which means my hair is dry as hell. Around this time of year just a moisturizing deep conditioner once a week will NOT keep my curls hydrated until the next wash day. So, this is when I start to incorporate hot oil treatments.  Basically what a hot oil treatment does is super-moisturize your hair. Another way to get all the moisture you need is to include heat into your deep conditioning/treatment process and that's what I did.

*The measurements I state below are what worked for my hair. If you have less hair, use less of each ingredient to make a smaller batch and if you have more hair, use more of each ingredient to make a bigger batch.*

1/2 cup of Almond Oil

1/2 Jamaican Black Castor Oil

1 tablespoon Shea Oil

1 tablespoon Argan Oil

1 tablespoon Vitamin E Oil

3 drops Lavender Oil

3 drops Peppermint Oil

3 drops Tea Tree Oil

Shea Oil- prevents dry hair, rich in Vitamin E, softens hair, is anti-fungal, prevents breakage, strengthens hair  Argan Oil- rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin A, tames frizz, promotes hair growth, rids dandruff Vitamin E Oil- repairs damage to hair follicles, encourages hair growth Jamaican Black Castor Oil- properties accelerate blood circulation to the scalp, nourishes the scalp, strengthens roots Almond Oil- treats hair loss and damaged hair, nourishes and strengthens hair Lavender Oil- promotes hair loss, increases blood circulation to the scalp Peppermint Oil- rejuvenates hair follicles, promotes hair growth

Tea Tree Oil- unclogs hair follicles, nourishes roots, soothes itchy scalp, prevents lice, dandruff, baldness, and Psoriasis

It would be ideal to have an applicator bottle to mix all of the oils into and apply them onto your hair, but I just used a spray bottle and beforehand mixed the oils together in a bowl that had a spout (so I wouldn't make a mess transferring the oil from the bowl to the bottle.) After everything is mixed together, I heated some water on the stove until it started to lightly boil. I put the water in the appropriate bowl and but the bottle of mixed oils in the bowl to safely be heated up.

When the bottle is as hot as you want it, (not too hot hopefully because you don't wanna burn your scalp) I began applying the mixture to each quadrant of my damp hair. With the oil already being warm/hot, it opened my cuticles and softened my hair, allowing me to detangle.

After my hair is all detangled and I'm drench in oily goodness, I put on my shower cap and let it sit for about twenty minutes.

After the wait is when I apply more heat. I adjust my hair in the clips to make sure it's all at the top and exposed, including the tips. Then I reapply the shower cap, and cut on my blow dryer. I disperse the heat over my head for about 5 minutes. This is just to further open my cuticles because I need all the moisture possible and my hair can be really stubborn at times. I usually let it sit for about thirty more minutes then proceed to shampoo/cleanse and conditioner as usual.

The photo below depicts before, during, and after my hot oil treatment.

After my treatment my hair was very voluminous, moisturized, and soft. I will be alternating these treatments to every other month because I don't want my hair to become too soft and become susceptible to breakage.

Don't forget to listen to what your hair is telling you! Don't neglect her, love her, cherish her, and give her what she likes (:
